The HEAT in Africa programme is an innovative approach to addressing the human resources for health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. HEAT’s intention is to reach thousands of health workers and to transform the way healthcare is delivered and health workers are supported in communities across Africa. HEAT will harness leading-edge health education expertise to develop a comprehensive online knowledge bank of materials that can be freely accessed and used by anyone in the world – by individuals, in-country organisations training community health workers and global health institutions. Collaboration will underpin the success of HEAT. We will work with our partners in Africa to identify the health education and training needs that are common across the region, and clarify the curriculum resources that will best meet those needs. African authors will be working with academics at the Open University to develop high quality, relevant materials that can be localised to different national contexts. Content will reflect expertise in-country and build on this in order to complement and scale-up existing programmes of health education and training. Supported by funding from the Ferguson Trust, HEAT is beginning its first phase of development in Ethiopia, Ghana and XXX. It complements and builds upon existing successful Open University programmes, such as the initiative that is currently transforming education for primary teachers in sub-Saharan Africa (TESSA).
